| Introduction | ||
SCAN Web provides powerful graphical data display pages. Users can easily select various data views to display produce either concise summary views or detailed RWIS data. Site Summary, Site Status, and historical data pages are available to enhance operational effectiveness. In addition, SCAN Web integrates current video images when sites are configured with video cameras. SCAN Web can also display weather and pavement forecasts from SSI's SCAN*Cast forecast service. The purpose of this document is to describe standard SCAN Web functionality. Customized pages and/or features will not be covered by this document. |
| How Does SCAN Web Work? | ||
SCAN Web ties Web addresses, or Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), to the RWIS data collected in your SCAN SQL Server database. Your SCAN Web site is a collection of RWIS data views that are displayed on web pages in your web browser. SCAN Web uses Active Server Pages (ASPs) to dynamically build each web page displaying the latest data collected by your RWIS. Each SCAN Web page also contains hyperlinks that allow you to move easily between pages to view your all of your RWIS data in various formats. |
| Accessing SCAN Web | ||
Accessing the data from your SCAN Web Server can be accomplished two ways. The fastest way is via a network connection. Deploying your SCAN Server on a local area network is by all means the preferred way to distribute your RWIS data to the people who need it the most. To access your SCAN Web site from a network, simply open your Internet browser and enter the name of the SCAN Web Server in the Address box of your browser. Your initial SCAN Web page should be displayed when you enter this name and press return. If you get an error message, you may need to insert an entry for the web server in the Hosts file or you can try entering the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the web server. Please contact your System or Network Administrator if you experience problems accessing the web site across your network. You can also provide dial-in user access using a phone line and a remote access service (RAS) dial-up connection. Users would require a dial-up connection and a modem on their personal computer. Dial-in lines and modems dedicated for user access would also be required on your SCAN Server. Once users connect to the SCAN Server they can use their browser of choice to access the SCAN Web user interface as if they were on a network. Contact your Information Services or System Administrator for more information on accessing your SCAN Web Server. To set SCAN Web as your default home page, set the SCAN Web Home page as the default "Home" page in your browser's preferences. If you don't want the SCAN Web page to be your home page and you don't want to type in the name every time, you can add the page to your Favorites folder. The method for setting preferences differs slightly between Netscape and Internet Explorer so please refer to your browser's on-line documentation for details. Once the SCAN Web page is added to your Favorites list, you can access the page at any time by selecting the Favorites pull down menu and selecting the SCAN Web page. |

| On-line Glossary | ||
SCAN Web also provides an on-line glossary which helps identify each data item as well as important RWIS terms. Simply select a term or column heading to display a brief description. |
| Disable/Enable Java Links | ||
Throughout SCAN Web links are provided to historical surface data, SCAN*Casts, and maps. Due to varying download speeds that are available (dial-up and network), SCAN Web allows users to specify whether a link to these three types of pages should link directly to web page that uses embedded Java applets or to a page that does not use Java applets. Pages that use Java applets require more download time than most other web pages. If you are accessing SCAN Web via a dial-up connection you may wish to disable the default Java links. Once disabled, any embedded links (such as History links) that linked to a Java page will then link direct to a table view. You will still be able to display graphs and maps; however, you will now link to a table view page by default. In most cases, once a page containing a Java applet has been cached by your browser it will display much faster. The Disable/Enable Java link provides users the capability to change the default behavior of embedded links between Java pages and table view pages. To view any SCAN Web page that uses Java, you must be using a Java enabled browser and have the Java functionality properly configured and enabled. |
| Additional Links | ||
Additional links can be added to the SCAN Web menu section for any URL address by contacting your SSI representative. |
| Maps Menu Section | ||
The Maps menu will be displayed if your SCAN Web configuration contains any regional, airport, or site maps. SCAN Web maps use embedded Java to display color-coded sensor locations and All maps described in this section use embedded Java applets. This menu section is not displayed if you have disabled your Java links. |
| Regional Maps | ||
Regional maps are designed to provide a graphical overview of a given area of operations such as a state, district, or county. Each RWIS site is represented by a triangle symbol and is color-coded based on the "most critical" sensor at the site. If all surface sensors at the site are reporting identical statuses the sensor with the lowest surface temperature will be displayed. Refer to the SCAN Web glossary for the list of surface statuses and their order of criticality (from most critical to least critical). To identify a site, simply move your mouse over the triangle and a Below the site data section, links will be displayed that control the types of sensors that will be displayed on the map. You can display maps that will only display deck (bridge or elevated) sensors, only runway (sensors installed on runways or taxiways) sensors, only roadway sensors, or all sensors (default). For example, you can configure a map to show the most critical bridge sensor for each site by selecting the Deck Sensors link. If a site does not have the selected sensor type it will be represented by a white triangle. This sensor filter will remain in affect until the All Sensors or the Sensors link located in the Summary menu section on the navigation bar is selected. Links to the selected site's Site Status page, as well as, links to site maps configured for the site will also be provided. You may refresh the map by selecting the Refresh Map link. If data for a location has expired (by default, older than 2 hours), the symbol representing the location will be colored black. Regional maps can also display data tags for a single data type (i.e. Air Temperature, Surface Status, etc.). Simply select the data item you wish to display and a data tag will be displayed for each site provide the site is configured for and currently reporting the desired reading. |
| Airport Maps | ||
Airport maps provide the same functionality as the regional maps described above; however, the region shown covers an entire airfield. In addition to displaying sites, an airport map will also show each surface sensor (represented by a circle) color-coded with the current surface status reported by the surface sensor. This provides airport customers with large airfields a convenient way to display all sites and sensors on one map. Users may select either site or sensor symbols to view detailed RWIS information for each location. |
| Site Maps | ||
Site maps depict a single site location, typically a stretch of road, intersection, interchange, a close up view of an airport runway, or portion of an airfield. The background for a site map can be a digital photo, site graphic that depicts the site in detail, or a camera image collected from the site. If a camera image is used, the map background will update each time a new image is collected. In addition to displaying sensor and site locations, site maps can also be configured to display data tags that display most atmospheric and sensor data for each symbol shown. These tags will "float" Atmospheric data tags will be colored gray when their data is current. Surface sensor data tags will be colored based on the surface status reported by the sensor when the data is current. All data tags will be colored black when the data being displayed has expired (by default, older than 2 hours). If data has expired, the symbol representing the location will be colored black. Data may expire due to communication problems between the SCAN Server and RWIS site or the polling interval for the expired site may need to be shortened. All symbols and data tags will be displayed on site maps regardless of the type of sensor filter current in affect. |
